Description:
The 4088 family of slide rules are duplex type of slide rules. The 4088s were constructed on a mahogany frame with celluloid laminated to the surface. The markings are engine divided. The scales are as follows:
- Front: DF = CF CIF C = D
- Rear: K A = S T CI = D, L
In 1922 a "B" scale was added and the new scale set is as follows:
- Front: DF = CF CIF C = D
- Rear: K A = B S T CI = D L
The following models are part of the 4088 family and only vary in length:
- 4088-1 --- 5"
- 4088-2 --- 8"
- 4088-3 ---10"
- 4088-5 --- 20"
- N4088-5 - 20"
History:
The 4088 first appeared in the 1913 catalog. The 4088 family last appeared in the 1937 catalog. The following is a brief history of the 4088 family of slide rules as is told in the K&E catalogs that are available at this time. Exact timing is not possible because of the time between catalogs.
- 1913a - The 4088-2 and 4088-3 were introduced. This first issue had the column type of cursor.
- 1915 -- The "frames" all glass cursor was introduced.
- 1916 -- The 4088-5 was introduced in the 1916 Slide Rule only catalog.
- 1922 -- The "B" scale was added to the rules. The 4088-1 was added to the family
- 1936 -- The "improved metal framed" cursor was introduced except for the 4088-1. The 4088-1 retained the all glass frame cursor. The 4088-5 was replaced with the N4088-5.
- 1938 -- The 4088 family last appeared in the 1938 price list.
- 1939 -- The 4070-3 and 4071-3 were introduced replacing the entire 4088 family.
