Gunter Slide Rule
Description:
The "Gunter" or "Engineers" Slide Rule dates back to the first slide rule offered by K&E. It is not absolutely clear but this rule appears to have its roots in a very early #479 Engineers Slide Rule shown in the 1881 catalog. 1881 is the first year that K&E imported slide rules from Germany. The 479 is the only slide rule shown in the 1881 catalog.
In the early 1890s the 1745 developed into a family of slide rules that seem to be similar. In 1897 the "Gunter" name was applied to the 1745 and the "Mannheim" name was applied to the 1746 and 1748. In 1901 the 1745 model number was converted to 4028. The 4028 was last shown in 1906.
Model numbers in the group:
- 479 ------- 10" Boxwood side rule with ivory slip.
- 479-1 ---- 10" Slide rule

- 4028 ----- 10" Gunter slide rule
History:
The 479 was first shown in the 1881 catalog. The last mention of the 4028 is in the 1906 catalog. The following is a brief history of the Gunter Slide Rule as is told in the K&E catalogs that are available at this time. Exact timing is not possible because of the time between catalogs.
- 1881 -- The 479 was first shown and this was the only slide rule shown in the 1981 catalog.
- 1906 -- The 4028 Gunter Slide Rule was last shown in the 1906 catalog.
