K&E 1747
5 Inch Mannheim Slide Rule - 1898 - 1900
These scans are from the collection of Lawrence Bouett. This rule was acquired by John Prince about 2005.
This slide rule belonged to Lawrence's father William Bouett a civil engineer from the late 1930s to 1972. William Bouett received the rule from Alfred Solano his grand-uncle. Alfred Solano was a civil engineer from about 1880 to 1930 and took an interest in William Bouett's career.
Originally this rule was thought to be a 4030 from 1900-1903. Upon study of the photo of the end frame below it is revealed that that the frame is one solid piece and not adjustable. The adjustable frame was introduced in the 1900/01 K&E catalog. Having a solid frame makes this rule the first 5" Mannheim slide rule that K&E produced and it only shows in the 1899 catalog and probably was produced between 1898 and 1900..
